My aim was to find a Rioja that stands out from the crowd whilst retaining the quintessential characteristics which are synonymous with the region.

A Gran Reserva must spend at least two years in oak and three years in bottle and this wine sees 12 months in both American oak (imparting more sweeter flavour characteristics) and 12 months in French oak (imparting more savoury flavour characteristics).

2011 was an excellent vintage for Rioja and the Coto de Imaz is a perfect marriage between oak and red fruit. I'd certainly recommend opening this for a couple of hours prior to indulging.
