Blockhead, Shiraz, South Africa
The big, luscious Shiraz grape is one of the success stories of the New World (outside of Europe) wine varietals. Originally from the Rhone Valley, this grape has found its home in dry, hot climates and the Western Cape is one of these regions.
South African Syrah tends to be heavy in blackberry and plum, with a voluptuous full body and a good dose of tannin. The vines are trellised and planted in shale soils bordering the Swartland Region. The juice is fermented on skins in stainless steel tanks to maintain the fruit and spicy flavours. This wine represents all the classic aromas of the Syrah grape being pepper, blackcurrant and cassis, which lead to rich dark fruit flavours, a touch of spice and a long finish.
