Bodega Garzón Estate, Tannat Reserve, Uruguay
Wine of the Month, November special.
Bodega Garzón is a family-owned winery in Maldonado on the Atlantic coast in southern Uruguay. They pioneered viticulture in this area over 10 years ago, and have since become the standard bearer for premium wines from Uruguay. In November 2018, their pioneering status was recognised by Wine Enthusiast with the ‘New World Winery of the Year’ award.
Uruguay is the fourth biggest producer in South America but only exports 3% of all the wine made. Tannat is a growing extremely well here (originally from Madiran in France). It has a very high polyphenol count (think similar to the force in Star Wars). This basically means its got a hell of a lot going on and is much richer and deeper than Cabernet Sauvignon for instance. This is the reason they have added Merlot to the wine to balance it out and boy have the balanced it out.
This wine is deep purple in colour. On the nose, there are intense aromas of plums and raspberries, with a hint of spice. It is a full- bodied wine, with ripe tannins complementing the juicy dark fruit and notes. It is a striking and powerful wine. We absolutely love this wine!
