Chiara Condello, Romagna Sangiovese Predappio, Italy
Meet Chiara Condello, a young winemaker based in Predappio, Emilia-Romagna - specifically, Romagna. Romagna and Emilia were once separate in history, culture, and dialect, but today they are part of a broader administrative region. Chiara owns seven hectares of land, with 4.8 hectares planted to Sangiovese, and the rest split between woods and olive trees. She produces her own wine under her own label, with her first vintage in 2015.
Chiara's vineyards are located in Predappio, one of the twelve villages that give their names to Sangiovese subzones authorised as of the 2011 vintage. The sedimentary soil here, called spungone, is relatively young and contains intact shells of marine life. Chiara's wines, both a 'normale' and a Riserva called Le Lucciole, are 100% Sangiovese and exceed the requirements of the appellation. Farming is organic and the wine is made using open-top fermenters and ageing in large neutral vessels, inspired by the late Giulio Gambelli.
We are thrilled to be a part of Chiara's journey, as her Sangiovese wines showcase the nuances and energy that lovers of this grape can't live without.
